Let Rain Stop Play...No Way!

Blog Date - 20 October 2014

Warm summer days with hazy sunshine is what most bikers dream of. But there is just something about that real first squally day of autumn that gets my grin factor set to high.

This particular windy autumnal day is club ride out day and it sees 6 hardy club members venture forth to Hebden Bridge.
The day starts off dry but it is rather blustery. I wonder why the boyfriend in front of me suddenly swerves. I look to see what he may have seen on the road just as I suddenly find my own bike being pushed sideways. He wasn't swerving he was wind surfing. Yeeh haa lets rock and roll. Two feet down is required at some traffic light stops as the wind does its best to push the bikes over.

Not powerful enough today to unseat the bikers the wind seeks its amusement elsewhere by ripping the leaves off the trees. It then gathers these stolen leaves and whirls them around into a merry dance of spinning colourful vortexes. This autumn confetti display is an absolute delight to ride through. It certainly puts a smile on my face.

Later in the afternoon the rain joins the wind to be sure we all know that autumn is most certainly upon us. But we are all suitably prepared and a quick stop to pull on waterproofs is all that is required to have us all set up and ready for the challenge. We are all having a good day, made special by the company of good friends with lots of smiles.

Over hills and down twisty tracks the weather just adds to the thrill for me today. When you have on the right clothing and your mind is in the right place a day like today can be exhilarating. I was relishing the roaring in of autumn. My new waterproof over pants and new boots were proving up to the challenge. My new tyre was also upholding its good wet weather review and was staying stuck to the wet and leaf strewn roads.

I am or rather should I say used to be a hot house flower. I hated rain and the end of summer. But I have to admit as a biker I like the challenge that a wet windy day can bring. Let rain stop play ???? Not for this girl and this bike in won't.
