FZS600 Throttle Position Sensor - HOW MUCH?!?

Ever since I bought my Fazer there's been one small issue.  When I ride it runs fine, goes well and works as I'd expect.  On those rare occasions I open the throttle fully, something strnage happens, the rev counter drops to zero!  Having heard other bikers talking I know this is probably the computer trying to tell me something's amiss.  Logic also dictates that as this only happens on full throttle the only part of the computer system that will know this will be the throttle position sensor.

Having had the bike serviced I decided in for a penny, in for a pound, lets sort out this queer problem.  O look at the Haynes manual confirms it's something to do with the throttle position sensor - TPS.  Yamaha's user manual also confirms this.  All the forums also comfirm this...it's something to do with the TPS.

According to the Haynes manual, this is how you set up the TPS on the FZS 600 Fazer...   
1 - Switch on ignition
2 - Unplug the TPS - then reconnect (this tells the computer you're setting up the TPS)
3 - Loosen the TPS adjustment screws (torx with damn anti-tamper pins)
4 - Swivel the TPS around it's adjustment - too far one way the tacho reads 10k, too far the other the tacho reads 0k.  When it's just right the tacho reads 5k
5 - Tighten adjustment scres (torx)
6 - Ride bike happy it's adjusted right.

In reality this didn't happen on my bike.  I got all kind of weird and wonderful movements on the tacho and there was no satisfactory setting.  So I decided to remove the TPS and check the resistances.  According to Haynes there should be a 5k ohm resistance...somewhere.  I tried all three pins in all possible combinations and kept on coming up with 13k ohms.  It seems the throttle position sensor is defunct, and has probably been defunct since I bought the bike.

This leads to a quandry.  The bike works just fine with it's dodgy TPS, so why would I replace it?  It's working OK but it's not working as it should be, maybe if I replace the TPS it will work better, be even smoother, respond even better and run cleaner and more economically.  I decided to price up a new TPS.

£185.  I pointed out to the nice lady I only wanted the throttle position sensor, not all 4 carbs, the computer and a new engine...just the TPS.  No, that's £185 for the TPS.  Just the TPS.  Only the TPS.

I'm now considering trying to find a second hand one.
